The Chilkoot

My husband took our boys on the historic Chilkoot Trail with friends over the week-end. During the gold rush days, prospectors would travel this trail to get to the Yukon river so they could then take boats to the gold mines.
This was a demanding, 37 mile, 4-5 day hike (but our guys did it in 3 days!). Day 2 involved climbing the 3000 ft. "golden staircase" to cross the pass. Despite some rough spots all the boys did a great job!

I asked my oldest son what he thought of the experience and he said, "It was mostly fun, but don't ask me to do it again for awhile." He has about 1 year to rest and prepare to do it again.

Day 1: At the Trailhead

Suspension Bridge

Stone Trail Markers

Infamous "Golden Staircase"

(small red dots are the boys climbing ahead)

The Summit- we made it 3000 feet!

One of our favorite views

Onward ho! 5 miles to go for the day.

Dusk and our campsite is finally in view

Gorgeous morning as we leave Deep Lake

Lake Bennett in the distance-6 miles left!

The trail is taking it's toll...

...on more than one boy

(note: these were staged!)

Switchback looking down on the group

The home stretch. Everyone felt the railroad tracks were the hardest with uneven tracks, no change in terrain, and monotonous.

WE"RE DONE!
We are sore, stiff, tired, and the temperature dropped 20 degrees in the last 15 minutes.
But we made it!

What a great trip. I am so proud of the boys and so glad they went on this adventure with their dads! Thanks for a great weekend.

I really like this post. When I was reading it I thought that it is impressive the boys did this hike. Personally, I don't know how I would do. And then I thought, what a great memmory to make and have.

That looks like so much fun. That bridge scared me just looking at the picture.
