I have learned:
A tripod is a must. Unless you don't care about clear photos.
Lighting is crucial. It will make or break your shot.
You can buy your way out of some photography problems. The rest will take skill. And photoshop.
For the most part I am having a ball learning how to take pictures. I know that anything you want to improve at will take time, effort, and practice. I try not to expect too much of my photos. Still, sometimes I do want to pull my hair out because I want to get a certain result from my camera, but I just don't know HOW to do it. Yet.
While dear Husband and I were in Hawaii last month, I practiced taking portraits outside with different light sources. Hey, if you have to practice outside, it may as well be somewhere warm and gorgeous.
Here are a few of my sunset shots of DH. Half were taken with existing natural light and the other half I used a flash fill. Can you tell which is which? Of course you can. You're smart like that.

2 amazing observations:
Erin - sounds like you're really loving photography ... good thing, because you're really good at it! Great job on the pics of Reuben ... I'm pretty sure I can tell which ones used a flash. The more dramatic, darker ones were without. But every one of them is a great shot!
The flash fill does good stuff! I run into problems when there isn't enough light. It's really frustrating.
Oh yeah, and they look really good. Keep up the practice! You will get better and better.
